Know Before You Book
Best Programs for Flying with a Lap Infant
Not all award programs treat lap infants the same. These three stand out — knowing which program to book through can save you hundreds of dollars on a single trip.
🥇  #1 Overall
Alaska Airlines
Atmos Rewards
Taxes Only — No Fee
Industry-best policy. Atmos Rewards charges only applicable government taxes for lap infants on long-haul international award tickets — on Alaska, Hawaiian, and partner-operated flights booked on Atmos stock. That's often $5–$50 total, regardless of cabin class or fare level.
Per Alaska's site: "lap infants are charged only the applicable international taxes." Applies to awards on 027 ticket stock only.
🥈  #2 Flat Fee
Air Canada
Aeroplan
$25 CAD / 2,500 pts — Flat
Best flat-fee program. Aeroplan charges a fixed $25 CAD or 2,500 points one-way — no matter which airline you fly, which cabin, or what the cash fare is. Booking business class to Tokyo? Still $25. Unbeatable predictability on premium redemptions.
Flat fee applies to any Star Alliance partner booked through Aeroplan. No fuel surcharges added to infant ticket.
🥉  #3 Miles-Based
British Airways
Avios (BAEC)
10% of Adult Avios + 10% of Cash
Best miles-based option when cash fees are low. Infant pays 10% of the adult Avios — so on a 50,000-Avios business class seat, the infant costs 5,000 Avios plus 10% of the total cash amount on the booking. Shines on routes with modest fees; less competitive when BA's YQ surcharges are high.
If the adult pays 0 Avios (e.g. companion voucher), infant also pays 0 Avios. Bookable online.
Why this matters on premium cabins: A business class ticket from the US to Europe with a $5,000 cash fare means a $500 infant fee on cash-based programs (Delta, United, American, Air France). Book the same seat through Atmos Rewards and pay ~$20. Through Aeroplan, $25 CAD. The program you use matters far more than the airline you fly.
